THE ART

OF LOOKING

AT WHAT IS

This section, a tribute to Félicien Rops, contains works of a sexual nature that may shock or provoke controversy for some, while naturally delighting others. They are grouped here to avoid offending anyone.

If Rops's spirit bothers you, or if your upbringing, ethics, or sensibilities forbid it,

do not go any further.

That ? No !

FÉLICIEN ROPS OR THE ART

OF SAYING WHAT IS

"I am a Rops,

I cannot be virtuous,

I do not deign to be a hypocrite."

This profession of faith, Félicien Rops would embrace throughout his life. Born in Namur, Belgium on July 7, 1833, he was a friend of Baudelaire, whose collections he would illustrate.

In the 19th century, Félicien Rops lived by this credo throughout his life. Born in Namur, Belgium, on July 7, 1833, he was a friend of Baudelaire, whose collections he illustrated. His work and lifestyle reflect the independence of mind and creativity that characterized his art and his life. A free thinker and humanist, he remains today one of the least hypocritical, most creative, free, controversial, and provocative men of his time. He remains a pivotal figure in the history of Western art.

Arthur Rimbaud, his near contemporary, was abandoned by his friends after the publication of "Le Bateau ivre" (The Drunken Boat), under the pretext of bad taste. He countered this setback by unwittingly inventing the concept of "BAD GENRE" (BAD GENRE).

There we are.
