The question

Where did this inadequacy of life

come from, this instantaneous decay

of the things on which it relied?

Later, with Walter Scott, she became enamored with historical things, dreaming of chests, guardrooms, and minstrels. She would have liked to live in some old manor house, like those chatelaines with long bodices, who, under the trefoil arches, spent their days, elbow on stone and chin in hand, watching a white-feathered rider galloping on a black horse from the countryside.

The question

Why didn't you hold him back

with both hands, on both knees,

when he wanted to run away?

CULTURAL CONTEXT

Excerpt from Flaubert's novel

Charles's conversation was as flat as a sidewalk, and everyone's ideas paraded by, in their ordinary guise, without stirring any emotion, laughter, or reverie.

Human speech is like a cracked cauldron, where we beat out melodies to make bears dance, when we would rather soften the stars.

But her life was as cold as an attic with a north-facing window, and boredom, a silent spider, spun its web in the shadows of every corner of her heart.
